bonna
Bonna Mt. - a castle in Kremenets - I caught this pics on a quest of the Western region castles last winter. We managed to see five in one day! without much effort on our part. A tour guide explained this was built for the princess Bonna who misbehaved and was sent off by her husband to these parts. Also, the tour guide explained he washed his face every day with the water that stood for a few days with a piece of kremin - white stone in who’s honor the city is named and which you can still find in the fields these days.wiki page for the city: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/KremenetsThe city is surrounded by picturesque mountains, founded in 1226.

Trails of Ukrainian isurgent armly are here. One can take a speleological tour or a boat trip down Dnister river. The most known cave - Mlynky caves 25 km from Ternopil near village Zaliske .

Nouvelle

nouvelle A strange power holding over us - a posh coffee-patisserie place in Passage. The patio always been packed with most good-looking crowd in town during the summer. During winter the public hides in Louis XIV-like styled interior. The other day we tasted there coffee “Parisian” style. It had whipped egg whites with some kind of liquor in it- never heard of such thing being served in Paris ;) It tasted so good! They serve lunch fare too, as well as tons of elegant-looking sweets.

SHO magazine

Tuesday, October 31st, 2006

sho Marginal culture magazine in Ukraine www.sho.kiev.ua calls itself a magazine of cultural resistance, very much in tune with our national anthem lyrics, which goes like this: “Ukraine has not died yet..”.. for fifteen years now. Hope the definition will loose its actuality the same way and become just as redundant as the anthem lyrics, and converts more masses to their idea, because the guys write quality stuff. They offer an alternative spin on the current culture to commercial mags like Afisha, 10 Dney, What’s On and Zefir. SHO does not specialize in current event listing, although runs some ads. Looks like they put out most of their print content online. The site is great, although it’s pleasant to hold an intelligent glossy in your hands. I even forgive them for writing in Russian.

Watercolors by Shevchenko

shevchenko watercolors

Shevchenko concept got abused during the soviet times. But it’s very easy to recover his reputation in our mind as a artist. He did stunningly good watercolors, especially of his time in Kazakhstan, full with intricate detail and feel for color. The museum of Shevchenko displayed his better watercolors for the current month. Do check them out! The original watercolors are afraid of the light, so the opportunity like this lasts only about a month each year. The permanent exhibit that is now for renovation closed usually carries copies. The museum does not seem to have a site, see the artist’s profile on wiki and follow the local media for the opening news. See samples of his artwork on his Canadian museum site.

The babushkas watching over the exhibit there are terribly cute.

Beer in Ukraine is good

shalena mama

Beer tasting at Shalena Mama - rock-n-roll restaurant on the corner of Taras Shevchenko park. A separate word about the restaurant: it’s all about Rolling Stones, the music is by them, photos on the walls too and the dishes names on the menu come from their lyrics. It serves something pretty close to Thai food. Prices are moderate there and the crowd is yong and hip.
The country beer production booms nowadays. IT used to be that Obolon dominated the market. People say now it lost its gloss but their flavored varieties still appeal to the sweet tooth. Two top beers you’d find on sale in Kyiv are Slavutych or Chernigivske. Besides, there are Rogan, Sarmat, Dnipro, Yantar, etc. The top beers offer tons of their own varieties. Kyiv Post votes Chernigivske Bila Nich as the best.

Viennese buns - Videnski bulochky

vinennese buns

It’s an excellent place to recharge on coffee and have some pastries. More serious lunch fare is available in the room on the left, sweets and freshly baked bread are attractively displayed to your right as you enter. Burkifli is their hit for my brother. I often order palmier - it’s perfectly dry. Croissants and pies look always good, double check if they were made today if you pop in there too early. In the mornings locals and office workers have there quick breakfasts. At midday - girlfriends get together for chat.  (more…)
