Two men playing chess in the park
7×7 inches, oil on canvas, 2008
This painting is to be exhibited at the Islington Arts Factory Autumn Salon.
Men like these make up a common sight in city parks, especially at Taras Schevchenko in the center of Kyiv, Ukraine. The air around them is very competitive. Many onlookers gather to witness particularly intense matches. I suspect there is some betting going on during the games as well. This painting is part of my post-Soviet series.

Dear olechko. I never really check out the guys in Shevchenko Park, however, I loved it on Sunday afternoon in L’viv when all the men came out in their lovely suits (it was spring but coolish), playing chess and checkers or backgammon on the seats in the middle of Svobody (?) Prsp. It was so cool, just like this pic!
