Old apothecary in Podil

Monday, November 10th, 2008

This is an interior of an old apothecary situated at the bottom of Andriyivsky uzviz in Podil. It’s still functioning, selling all kinds of nice organic things, soaps and potions. Some rooms in it function as a museum. This was one of them. I would not have minded to have a study looking like this.

Cobblestones on Adnriyivsky descent

Sunday, November 9th, 2008

This lady was walking down very uneven cobblestone street (Andriyivsky descent) in some super high sky heels. It was painful to look at it, so I excluded her legs here. But you can get the idea from the way she is leaving that she has a very hard time to walk.

Puhskinska on Khreschatyk sts.

Saturday, November 8th, 2008

Not thrilled with the result of this cityscape here, but it’s a daily painting challenge and I must put out one painting a day, so here it is. This meant to be a view from my friend Marta’s condo on Pushkinska st in Kyiv. It’s smack in the city center, and you can see the tops of the Maidan monuments and hear all the happenings there. This particular night Elton John performed  while we listened to his concert live from Marta’s balcony.

Horodetskogo street view

Friday, November 7th, 2008

This is a view from the apartment on Horodetskogo st. in Kyiv that we rented last year. You could see the top of the Angel statue on the Maidan Nezalezhnosti as well as the main clock on the square. The street is lined with posh boutiques and trees are decorated with illumination all year round. I miss that apartment now.

Urban sketches

Wednesday, November 5th, 2008

Urban sketches are thriving and I am happy to currently represent London on it (along with the celebrated blogger Katherine Tyrrell of Making the Mark)! 28 correspondents from around the world draw and tell stories about their respective cities and travels. The number of unique visitors on the site is amazing and the quality of work is so high, it’s intimidating at times. I am loving to participate in this exercise and posted my first bit on it just today.

Watching the birds

Tuesday, November 4th, 2008

Watching the birds here by the pond.  It’s cold gray and wet outside, but the kids can not possibly stay  in any weather.

At Volodymyrsky cathedral

Monday, November 3rd, 2008

This was the closest church to my place in Kyiv but shamefully I only popped in there a few times. Being a historic landmark, it’s as much a place of worship, as a place for appreciating good art and architecture. The frescoes inside are by Vrubel and his students. I think it’s the incident with an overly-zealous babushka at the church (I tried to take a picture inside) kept me away. Surprisingly many young people still come to places like this, if not for traditional worship, then for some form of personal meditation.

Still working on this one. Love the sweet image though: dad just got in from a long trip away, and brought an airplace as a present…

I used to live in a building on this corner for two years. It’s quite busy and offers great scene for daily observations. I have tons of sketches of people there, all done from my apartment window. This little oil is of a snowy late night, and of the stop lights reflecting itself onto the pavement, trees and the road… The winter is coming soon.
