Watermelons off the street 2008 oil on hardboard 151x15 cm

2008 oil on hardboard 15×15 cm

Currently on hold for the exhibition at the Art Raw Gallery in New York during February-March.

After some trial and error, I have started taking a closer look at my subjects, therefore this watermelon lady’s head is cropped. there is no way I can give credit to all the fine detail on such a small format: 15×15 cm. Hopefully this closer look will divert more attention to doing right the things that do make it to the picture.

I am loving the religious theme going on right now.  It’s really hard to depict the grins on people’s faces there in such small format. The priest blessed the people pictured behind with some blessing water and so they look soaking wet and happy.

A while back Ukrainian Museum of Russian art had on a Soviet Art retrospective (link leads to some of the better examples, although the text is in Ukrainian).

I noticed in my progress the Ukrainian orthodox theme repeating over and over. I like the traditional ceremony, decor and dress. besides my parents are great appreciators for going to church (not as much for worshiping as for admiring the festivities, architecture and company of others at church).  In fact this instance happened during the Honey Spasa festival when the priest blessed the first crops of my dad’s honey and the jar of honey wine you see at front here.

Continuing here on my orthodox christian theme.  Love it for the picturesque settings, sumptuous interiors (like this icon arrangement at the front gates of the church, called the God’s gate). Characters to spot there are equally worth the pic.

There is this amazing coffee shop on top of the Magnus shopping center in Lviv, where we usually have their yummy dumplings and enjoy one of the best views over the Lviv city center. This painting is part of my post-Soviet series.

Benjamin Sullivan has an amazing output of artwork primarily in casual portraits.

Forgot the name of the place, but it’s the type where the waiters act way too cool for their visitors.  The digs are really impressive though. Will look up the name for it shortly.

Went to see the Threadneedle prize show at the Mall galleries this year. Lots of great figurative art,  artists of note for us were Paul Brandford, Peter Brown among others.
