Soul-warming traditional tea in a metal tea glass holder is a must when on the train. The designs on those pretty antique (from the 60s) glass holders are of some kind of trains and rail station reliefs. I suppose this is one of the first brands we got used to when growing up, the format of serving this tea was uniform all across USSR. Always lots of sugar was provided with it, sometimes lemon but never milk.

This is an interior of St. Volodymyr Cathedral in Kyiv. I liked the contrast between the view of the tourist - architecture appreciator (my dear friend Stephanie) and the babushka in the background who is fixing the candle stand.  The cathedral happens to have some of the most renowned frescoes in the country.

The orchard on the bee farm produces now steady crops of apples among other things. This year was not too rich, but enough to fill this nice basket.

Yesterday we went down to Windsor to see Queen’s weekend home. The local community there was running a pumpkin carving contest that we just had to participate in before we caught the train back to London. Here’s a jolly fellow that turned out as a result.

Still working on this one. Love the sweet image though: dad just got in from a long trip away, and brought an airplace as a present…

Watching ducks

October 24th, 2008

These are the ducks from the same St. James Park in London. Lovely pond there, full of at least dozen different kinds of birds (the beautiful gray young swan there in the background).

We were chasing those poor two geese all across the lawn. They must be used to this daily exercise by the tourists like us. St. James park is fast becoming my favorite in London. With its pond, beautiful flowerbeds and rich wildlife (pelicans!), it can only get better when the view on Buckingham palace opens up. Also a great quiet place to escape to after the hustle of the city center. Oh, and I can’t even begin to tell how nice it is to sit at the Cafe on the Park there. If I ever to make a date, I will have it there, ho.

This is an observation from my daily Kyiv life (from last winter, actually).  The lovely ladies of International Women’s Club of Kyiv (well, those who had babies obviously) met up sometimes at the Kaiser Cafe at the Premier Palace for a play session and a chat. I purposefully chose for the pucture overly bright colors to make it more “baby-friendly”.

There is an interesting movie for all the women artists out there: Who Does She Thinks She Is (via FreelanceSwitch)

I used to live in a building on this corner for two years. It’s quite busy and offers great scene for daily observations. I have tons of sketches of people there, all done from my apartment window. This little oil is of a snowy late night, and of the stop lights reflecting itself onto the pavement, trees and the road… The winter is coming soon.

We had a great weekend in London: crispy fall light and stark shadows, ruffling leaves. Got to see the concert at the ICA by the Sads - they play their melancholic sweet music straight into the headphones, so if you had none, all you get is the tapping of feet on the ground; really cool effect. Later on stopped by the Roundhouse at Covent Garden to sketch this two elderly couples (pic on the right) taking their pint pre- or post-theater. And then went on to Stanfords’s travel bookstore (pic on the left) to pick up some maps for the upcoming driving trip in Italy (yey!).
